Assistant Professor, Indiana University

I consider outreach to be vital to the field of geosciences – without it a lot of people would never be exposed to how incredibly fascinating the world can be! I utilize outreach opportunities as an attempt to demonstrate how geology can shape our understanding of the world around us, and was fortunate enough to be able to share my excitement for the field at IdeaFestival Bowling Green 2020:

I have previously been involved in many outreach activities to excite a new generation of curious scientists:

  • I have co-coordinated a booth within Science City at the Tucson Festival of Books (TFOB) with a live volcano demonstration. TFOB is one of the largest literary events in the country and brings more than 100,000 people to the campus of the University of Arizona. Science City is a neighborhood within TFOB that provides hands-on activities, demonstrations, and talks for all ages. Visitors have the opportunity to experience the connection between our daily lives and advances in science and have a chance to directly interact with researchers at the university.

  • I was an instructor at the UA Sky School where I was able to enlighten Tucson, AZ students about the local and regional geology. The UA Sky School provides field-based, residential inquiry science education programs to Arizona K-12 students. Sky School uses the unique sky island environment in the Catalina Mountains of Southern Arizona to help students build an appreciation and deeper understanding of our community and our earth. More about Sky School can be seen on my teaching page.

  • I helped develop instructional modules related to mining in collaboration with the University of Arizona Superfund Research Program and Tohono O’odham Community College. These modules included instructional material, hands-on learning activities, and teaching presentations that covered topics in mining such as copper mining and processes, environmental impacts of mining, remediation, and socio-cultural impacts of mining. The modules were created for a specific tribal college in Arizona, the Tohono O’odham Community College, but can be modified for other interested tribal audiences.

I am currently in the process of developing and implementing a new, interactive outreach program, so if you have ideas for outreach or have questions, feel free to get in touch.
