I consider outreach to be vital to the field of geosciences – without it a lot of people would never be exposed to how incredibly fascinating the world can be. So much of what we do has direct impacts on people and their daily lives, so communicating our work and highlighting the importance of what we do is a critical aspect of being a scientist. I utilize outreach opportunities as an attempt to show the applications of my work and demonstrate how geology can shape our understanding of the world around us.
I have recently begun a podcast, Earth on the Rocks, that aims to get to know the person behind the science while also discussing some the exciting work they are doing. Each week has a new guest I get to chat with from within the earth and atmospheric sciences and we hear about how they ended up in the field, some of their favorite memories from their time as a student or in their career, and advice they have for folks interesting in learning more. It has been a great opportunity to show some of the different avenues into the geosciences and the wide variety of job opportunities within the field.
You can find the podcast on all major streaming platforms (Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, etc.) or directly on our website: Earth on the Rocks. Or listen to the latest episodes below:
I was also fortunate enough to be able to share my excitement for the field at IdeaFestival Bowling Green 2020. IdeaFestival Bowling Green is an annual one-day celebration designed to inspire the next generation of creators, thinkers, and innovators which brings together middle and high school students from across the state of Kentucky.
